We’re taking a giant leap into the future with HSB Living Lab. In close collaboration between people, researchers and businesses, we’re creating the housing of the future in the third generation of Living Lab. HSB Living Lab is a world-unique arena in which we’re developing new ways to build and shape next-generation housing. Located on Chalmers’ Campus Johanneberg in Gothenburg, this is no ordinary building – it’s a living laboratory offering us the opportunity to conduct research in an entirely new way.

HSB Living Lab is a portable four-storey building that welcomed its first residents on 1 June 2016. Three of the floors offer accommodation for students and guest researchers, and on the ground floor there are shared spaces consisting of offices, meeting rooms, a showroom for research projects and a modern laundry studio. There are 29 apartments in HSB Living Lab, where the tenants live in a constantly changing and evaluated environment, while research is continually in progress.

The project will be testing completely new technological and architectonic innovations over a ten-year period. Experiments that provide us with the know-how to build the housing of tomorrow. We want answers to questions such as: How can we conserve resources and energy? How should we cook our food, how should we do our laundry, how should we build and adapt our homes in order to create sustainability – today and tomorrow?

HSB Living Lab is run by 12 partners as a means of creating a truly collaborative arena for new knowledge, with a focus on social, economic and ecological sustainability.
